Then Gramps fell ill on a hot summer day. The doctor told him his working days were done. Reluctantly, Gramps and Gram sold most of their stock, keeping only a few chickens. There was no longer much work for Pal to do. He began going across the road to help Helen Johnsons. Every day, he brought their cows up to the barn. Every night, Helen put out a pan of food for him. But he didn’t forget Gramps, his master. He would visit Gramps and accompany him by his side for a while.

In October, Gramps was tired and his old heart gave out. With funeral preparations and all the people coming to the house, none of us gave much thought to Pal. Pal knew his master, Gramps, was gone, but he stayed by Gram and tried to help her, following her around the barn or the flower garden. As a working dog, Pal never retired. And he often spent time playing with us, leaving us kids a happy memory.
