Paragraph 1:
One summer afternoon I found Julian crying secretly. He had discovered Skunk’s cold body lying in the cage. I hugged the boy and tried to calm him. “I’m sorry,” I signed. “I know you love Skunk. We all do. But a mouse only lives a few years and it is time for him to go.” All my comfort didn’t work. His beloved pet was dead and he was very sad. Brenda looked at me as if she was asking, “Why is he crying?”
Paragraph 2:
“Julian wants the mouse,” I signed to Brenda. Immediately the dog ran out and returned less than a minute later, carrying a young field mouse. She gently laid the mouse on Julian’s shoe. Julian’s tears turned to laughter as we watched the frightened little creature jump to escape into the yard. The dog had cheered him up when I couldn’t. Some people think dogs can’t really understand humans and insist owners only imagine they can communicate with their pets. Actually, that is just because they don’t meet Brenda.

Paragraph 1:
Then one day, something happened, which forever changed the way I thought about family. When we went out getting a haircut for Michael, the stylist asked if he had any brothers or sisters. This time, however, Michael responded, “Yes. I have a brother named Terry.” I looked up from the magazine and laughed. But later I realized the meaning of his answer. On the drive home I asked Michael why he said so. In a very matter-of-fact way, he said, “Because he is and I love him.”
Paragraph 2:
From that day forward I introduced Terry as Michael’s brother. Many strangers and even some friends didn’t understand that and threw funny questions. But we didn’t care at all. Terry lived with us for more than thirteen amazing years until his health became so worse that he needed to move into a nursing home. During that time, I watched Michael quickly grow into the role of the big brother. He read to Terry, protected Terry, cared for Terry, and watched Terry grow older. They were true brothers.
